‘Year of Wonders’ by Geraldine Brooks is reviewed by Fiona (Reader Development Team.)

“Year of Wonders” is based on the true story of the Derbyshire village of Eyam, which shut itself off for a year to protect its neighbours once the plague reached it in 1666. It is the story of Anna, and through her eyes we see the massive loss of life, the survivors’ struggle to keep themselves going, the disintegration of the community and the emergence of an unlikely heroine.  This is a beautifully written book, and although upsetting in places, it is truly uplifting to see the courage of the human spirit.
