The Long Song by Andrea Levy

The Long Songbook cover by Andrea Levy. Recommended by Rehana who is a member of Bury Library’s Reader’s Group.

Set in Jamaica during the last turbulent years of slavery and the early years of freedom that followed, this novel follows the life of July, a slave girl, who lives upon a sugar plantation named Amity.

“Beautifully written, with great descriptions of landscape and people and a wonderful narrative. The Long Song, set in the 19th Century, is the story of Miss July and her life on the sugar plantations of Jamaica. Told to us through her memoirs, it gives us an insight into the horrors of the slave trade – shocking, tragic, heart breaking but never loses its sense of resilience, and always told with a light touch of humour and sensitivity, to help the reader deal with horrors of that time.”

  1. to be honest I am finding this a hard read. I am part way through and find the dialect needs concentration which draws away from the story. Compared to other books I have read on this subject it is not really going into horrors, it is more about the house slaves and how they con the masters, I will however stick with it in the hope that it improves.
